Learning to properly brush, floss, and use mouthwash on your own takes a lot of practice. Years of practice. So, even though your toddler thinks he can handle this tooth brushing thing, you need to keep reinforcing and teaching the correct way to brush your teeth! Show them by brushing your own teeth, using mirrors so they can see how they are doing, and reminding them to get their front, sides, and top teeth all the same. Setting a timer, or using brushes that have built-in timers, like the Firefly ones we just got (you keep brushing until the light turns red or turns off), can help your child know that they need to brush longer, and do a better job.

I am currently working with my kids on brushing their teeth and it has definitely been a struggle. One of my kids absolutely hates brushing and the other one won’t let me brush for her anymore. I am all for them brushing their own teeth but they don’t really do the best of jobs. I have been thinking about talking to a dentist about the best method for them. Hopefully I can find the right solution through consultation as well as these tips, thank you for sharing!

These are some great tips, and I appreciate your advice to explain to your child why brushing is important. My son doesn’t like brushing his teeth, and he doesn’t seem to understand that it’s necessary. I’ll definitely try and explain to him that it’s important to keep his teeth healthy and maybe that will help. Thanks for the great post!

Great tips, as always. I love those toothbrushes! As adults we should get fun toothbrushes too. Don’t you think? When our kids were young and we brushed their teeth for them, we used to say, in an annoyingly high voice, “Oh noo! Go away Mr. Tooth Decay! Go away!” They thought that was so funny and they didn’t want the sugar bugs in their mouth. My 20 year old has never had a cavity and the other two aren’t too far behind her, so it must have worked.

These are great tips! So far, our son actually loves brushing his teeth. He always says “Mommy, too!?” and wants me to brush at the same time. I like the tip about reminding kids the importance of brushing teeth. That resonates with my eldest a lot, who likes to know the ‘why’ behind we do things 🙂 One thing I do is to sing a song while I brush the younger guys’ teeth. And I always give the a chance to brush their own teeth after I do it for them so that they feel important and for practice.
