Thanks for the comment Becca! Yes! It can be much more complicated to explain now!! Seriously! That's why I just wanted to keep it basic science first. We'll get to all the "clauses" later. Oh, boy.

I'm all for keeping it simple. Alas, when my kids' gay uncles decided to use surrogacy to have a baby, and the kids started to ask about that . . . . .

Well, you try to explain egg donation, IVF, and surrogacy to a first grader! I'm afraid I gave them rather too much information, and for a couple of weeks there I was sure I'd face an irate parent on the playground. Thankfully the other parents were cool about it and we all laughed about how much more complicated it is these days than when we were kids! "Right. So when a man and a woman love each other very much they get married. Or maybe they don't. But they love each other so much and they decide to have a baby to show that love to the world. Or sometimes they just get drunk and stuff happens. And sometimes instead of a man and a woman, it's two men, or two women, and then . . . ."

Thanks for visiting Nicole! And that is an interesting idea about the books. If only my kids could read yet... And I realize I recently read one of your posts - what to do after you yelled at your kids. Keep up the good work yourself. :)

HI! I love to hear how other parents explain this to their kids. We are big readers, so we bought a kids book that covered the basics (like you've described here) and read it to our girls along with their other books. It's amazing how "normal" it is now. We'll hear them reading about body parts and eggs one minute and then picking up a Mo Willems book the next! :)

P.S. I have the same theme for my blog. It's so fun to see how you've customized it! Thanks for all the fantastic posts!

Yes! Take your time! But, just be sure to answer it, and not just keep avoiding it. ;) Good luck! And thank you for commenting Cat.

Thank you for sharing your experience with this! We have not had these questions yet, but my son recently turned 4 and his questions are getting harder and harder. Love all the tips you shared, especially about not having to answer immediately. I think that sometimes as parents we think that we have to answer right away but really we don't. It's ok, like you said to tell them their questions are good but that a different time might be better for talking about it.
