"As often as I can stay calm enough to remember" - yup! That's the hard part huh? 2.5 year old twins are super fun. Ha. I remember that age well. Good luck remembering for you and for them. I totally think I need to do more as the adult than they do sometimes (though not because I'm crying, but more because I'm on the verging of yelling).

This totally works, I use this with my twins (2.5 years old) as often as I can stay calm enough to remember. The act of deep breaths is not only calming, but takes the focus off of whatever the situation is, even if for just a few seconds. And it is also a good practice for adults, so I'm reminding myself and teaching them a life-long stress response.

Yes. Simple. Short. To the point. :) And getting down to their level and really acknowledging your kids helps them calm down faster too.

This is awesome! Another thing I like to do is explain the situation in as simple of words as possible. A lot of the time my son will get upset because he wants something or doesn't want something, and I have found that getting down on his level and looking him in the eye while calmly explaining things helps most of the time!
