Don’t try to talk like an English professor (unless, of course, you are one). Nonacademic reading lets you experience literature in an emotionally raw way, enabling you to conflate real life with the text (literary theorists call this “mimetic reading”). A book group can become a sort of group therapy, a way for readers to collectively process their lives. When Peplow asked readers why they joined a book group in one-on-one interviews, many said they wanted to talk with others about books. But when he read through transcripts from dozens of hours of recorded group meetings, it became clear that they were grappling to understand themselves more deeply. “Reading and talking about fiction gives people a way of processing things that happened in their lives in a relatively safe space,” Peplow says.

This article is so stupid, anyone with common sense would know this. I started a book club three years ago and basically all you need to do is COMMUNICATE with your members! Pretty simple.

Our club has a library check out deal as well, we only get 10 copies and 5 digital it works as our group is smaller. I also find that a lot of clubs that I been in and around that they read a lot of serious books...My current club tries to mix it up with different genre types and we find that there aren't as many fun/funny reads as there are serious ones. Right now we are reading J Morgan McGrady's It's a Ball, and it has been for us! She is a hilarious writer and her book has been a riot. I recommend it to any club to lighten the mood!

Man you go to bed early!! You must wake up well before the birds! But, I'm a night owl. ;) Time IS hard for sure when you want everyone to come. And I didn't know libraries had "book club" check outs - how interesting! I guess it makes sense since some libraries have their own book club meetings too.

Some libraries even have "book club" check outs with 20 copies of the book. Provo had that, and our library in Farmington does too. But the time is the biggest thing for me! We have a book club that meets at 8:00, which is when I'm already in bed, so I can only go during the summers when I don't have work the next morning. But in Albuquerque we had one at 4:00, and that was PERFECT! I attended every single one! So time for me is a big indicator of whether I will attend or not.
