This is something I have thought about on and off. I don’t pay my kids for chores, and for the most part I do feel that is the right way. I am surprised however that my kids often won’t take up my offer to do extra things for money. They will more often want to do something for someone else for money! I guess their free time is more important to them when they are home. PS-the picture of your little ones cleaning is so cute!

HAHA!! This reminds me of my 6 year old so much! She receives money for birthdays, certain holidays, etc. According to her, she is “very rich”! In answer to tell her “no sorry honey that’s expensive or a totally unnecessary object” there was the reply of “well *I* have the money” – OR even better – that was the reply she would make after us explaining for the 1000th time why we couldn’t buy her a horse. Ah. It’s toned down in the last few months.. I think mainly because we’ve been steadfast in telling her that’s not how it works. Oh well. Thank you for sharing!

Great article! There’s nothing wrong in giving your child an allowance, but you should encourage them to earn it and not give it for free. If your child completes the assigned chores and tasks, you can give them the deserved plan and appreciate them for the job well done.

Kids should get paid for better grades because they need to be motivated, they will get inspired, you won’t have to get stressed out to get your kids to to get better grades, Many kids would get inspired to get better grades if we pay t 1ff8 hem. Many kids don’t have the motivation to get better grades and this is a way to inspire them.

In reply to Katie. Sounds smart. We never had regular chores growing up (which I now wish I did) but did get paid for extra jobs sometimes like washing my dad's semi truck. And that took quite some time. And was fun to use the hose. :)

I don’t believe in paying for every day chores. I never was and my kids won’t either. Extra jobs maybe. I believe a modest allowance is fine, but I don’t plan on tying it to chores.

As a parent, I feel that my child should be able to have his own money. He does have chores that he doesn’t get paid for because he is part of the family. Making his bed, cleaning his room, feeding the animals, helping in the garden, his own hygiene, and making sure his laundry makes it to the laundry room are examples of this. Other chores he does have the opportunity to earn money for doing them. Doing dishes, taking out the trash, vacuuming, raking, and lawn mowing are just a few examples of chores that my son is able to earn money for.

He understands that he puts 10% in his offering bank for church, half of rest in his savings bank, the other half in his spending bank. He can choose to spend his spending money on his choice. He’s currently saving for a game that he wants (if he doesn’t get it for Christmas or birthday). He can earn anywhere between $0.50 to $5.00 depending on the chore. If he doesn’t do any extra chores, he doesn’t get paid.

He is learning responsibility, good work ethic, integrity, self control, patience, the importance of tithing among other things. It also helps combat dishonesty and stealing. It works for us and gives our 10 year old son a little bit of freedom.

Interesting concept …

I see paying my kids to do chores as a way to teach them that they have to earn money for things they want. Earning money means work. We were having issues with my daughter constantly wanting STUFF, so we said she could earn money with chores, and there’s better incentive for larger chores. Every couple months, she’s allowed to spend half her earnings, while the other half is put into a savings account.

We’ve recently instilled a “credit” system if she wants something larger than what she has money for. So far, she doesn’t like having to pay us back, so she only spends what she has available 🙂 It works for us.
