This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Swap.com – Kids’ Consignment for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
We’re moving in two months’ time to a different state. As such we’ve been analyzing everything we own, trying to determine if we should keep, try to sell, donate, or trash certain items. And it’s hard because some things we’ll need to keep at least until closer to our move-out date (like the washer/dryer, lamps, and the microwave).
It’s hard knowing what is the best way to sell unwanted items!! Do you try to have your own garage sale? Do you partner up with others and have a larger garage sale (we did that a couple weekends ago)? Or do you list things through local consignment shops (like Indy’s Whale of a Sale)? And then there is the option of ebay, craigslist, Facebook community garage sale pages (I just joined one), newspaper ads, and word of mouth. But sometimes those present their own set of risks and challenges.
I don’t honestly know what is the best way to sell unwanted items. I think your community situation will play a big factor as well as the demographics. If you are trying to sell baby goods in an older, established area, it might not work so well. Or if you live in a college town, you might have a hard time selling antiques or items that have a higher value.
I have never sold items through consignment sales, but it has a major advantage over other options in that I can declutter my home right away. I can gather all my items, at one time, and drop them off for someone else to sell and list and advertise and do all the work, as opposed to waiting days, weeks, or even months to sell an item off Craigslist or ebay; or have sit to outside for an entire weekend trying to sell stuff via a garage sale.

That’s why I’m excited to learn more about Swap.com – Kids’ Consignment. They seem to have a very unique site, boasting tens of thousands of children’s items, and hundreds of maternity items too! And the prices are great, with many items under $10! I might have to stock up on some gifts for the kids through their site, especially considering shipping is free on your first order, and orders over $50 always ship free. I may not have sold through consignment shops, but I certainly love buying certain items from secondhand shops and consignment stores! The savings are amazing!
Plus, they have a 100% hassle-free return policy, so if you don’t like something or it doesn’t fit, you can send it back, something you don’t get from regular garage sales or consignment shops.
But, I really like that I could send them a big old box of kids stuff, with a UPS shipping label they’ll provide, for only $8.90 and then they’ll professionally photograph my items and list them to my account, but then let me set the prices. And the commission rate is $1+20% and the proceeds will be sent to your account within 14 days.
So, if I were to send them a big box of, say 100 items of my daughter’s baby clothes, (though they’d have be washed, free of stains/dirt, odor, and pet hair or working condition if it was a box of toys), someday because I was done having kids, or we didn’t have another daughter join our family ever, and each item sold for an average of $5, I would make $291.10. And I wouldn’t have to do any work! I wouldn’t have to take photographs or list them myself (like I’ve been doing) or schedule meet-ups or drive anywhere or have these unwanted items in my house for longer than I want.
Plus, your items are guaranteed to sell, because they will offer to buy them from you, and/or store them free for you for 9 months (or will ship them back to you if you so desire).
So tell me, how do you prefer to buy and sell kids’ items as well as other unwanted items when approaching a big move?

When the kids were little, we did buy and sell at local consignment stores…nothing like the company you are talking about here though. Swap.com looks really great…I wish I had known about them way back when! I’ll definitely share…this is a great option!

What a neat idea for a site. I have to show this to my daughter. She can use this for sure. I just got rid of a bunch of my own clothes because they were too big for me. I took them to a consignment shop. I also just donated a bunch of things to a thrift shop. I like to do that because it is a tax deductible donation at the end of the year. Every one wins!
