We all like friends, especially ones that come to visit us regularly! We get to know them really well and start to develop inside jokes and all that jazz.
And that’s true except when they come monthly, without fail, often at the worst time.
You know what I mean right? An unwanted houseguest can start to make us snappy and stressed and uncomfortable. Sometimes twisting our inside all up because it’s just not fun anymore.
This is totally what happens at least to me when it’s that Time Of The Month and my “Monthly Friend” comes to rear her annoying little head.
Yup. I’m talking about menstrual periods today on the blog.
So freaking fun.
I’m talking periods because it’s something all ladies deal with for a very, very long time and I have something to share about making them a little less terrible and a little easier and more affordable!
So, stick with me on this one ladies! I think you might like this, especially if you relate and or find this video funny (and informative):
Becuase today I'm talking about The Dollar Maxi Pad Club.
Dollar Maxi Pad Club
The Dollar Maxi Pad Club is a menstrual period product subscription service that delivers what you need to deal with your monthly "friend" starting at just $1 a month.
The Dollar Maxi Pad Club is a new company headed up by husband and wife duo Thane and Annette Belnap. I know Annette through blogging - she writes TipsFromATypicalMomBlog.com. She sent me some of their new products to test out and review and share with all of you (cause we're buddies).
But, even if we weren't buddies, I'd be curious about their service.
They are not the first period subscription box out there though I've never tried a different period box before.
I usually take care of my menstrual needs by buying jumbo boxes of pads, tampons, and liners whenever they go on sale, or I'm about to run out soon. I try to pair them with a coupon if I can to save even more. But, sometimes the brand I like isn't on sale, and I need them anyway.
And I totally think it's awkward shopping for and buying pads at the store. I mean, seriously. It just is. The people eying my cart as I continue to shop, the cashier at the register, the other ladies trying to discreetly grab their own products in the feminine care aisle, and my little kids all screaming to know what the heck is in those boxes. It is just... something I'd rather not do.
I already deal with enough people staring and making things awkward because of the circus I usually tote around with me (aka my five kids).
Clearly, this concept is exciting to me! And starting at just $1, even better!
But, of course, I don't want cheap period products. I'm sure we've all been there before, buying the cheapest pads or tampons because it's what we have a coupon for or it's on sale, or we just can't afford the name-brand or better product, and then curse ourselves when it feels like we're wearing a diaper or have a tampon that leaks.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who has done that....
We want products that work, that are comfortable AND are affordable. Some brands have just not worked with my body, my underwear, my flow, or my budget.
Overall, I liked most of the products I received from Dollar Maxi Pad Club! They are actually premium products and feature some unique features in comparison to their competition!
You can check out my Dollar Maxi Pad Club Review video I made here where I show you all the products close-up:
Dollar Maxi Pad Club Pads
The biggest unique feature? Dollar Maxi Pad Club's Menstrual pads have a bamboo activated charcoal strip.
I know you're wondering what the heck that is too. I was! But, it's actually super cool!
Here's why:
The Activated Bamboo Charcoal strip does three main, and amazing, things:
- alleviates cramping
- eliminates odors naturally
- kills bacteria
Those are three things every woman wants!
Here's how the bamboo activated charcoal strip works (according to their website):
"Our bodies emit positive ions and the charcoal emits negative ions. Negative ions neutralize free radicals, revitalize cell metabolism, enhance immune function, and they purify the blood. They also balance the autonomic nervous system, promoting deep sleep and healthy digestion.
Plus, toxins and bacteria that cause odor are also drawn to the charcoal strip and are eliminated from the body naturally through a process called adsorption. We say adsorb instead of absorb because the materials that charcoal takes up are attracted to and held by the surface of the charcoal particles rather than going inside it."
Pretty cool huh?
And I think they do help eliminate odors and alleviate cramping!
Their pads and liners are also ultra-thin and super soft and non-irritating. They don't chafe the skin so you could wear them every day if you needed too without annoying your sensitive lady bits. Despite their thinness, they are still super absorbable, locking in flow in under 1 second!
Their pads are also:
- Chemical-free
- Perfume-free
- Dye-free
- Free of any harmful ingredients "that got no business getting cozy with your hoooha"
Which is more than many popular pad and tampon companies can say!
They offer the following pad options:
- Ultra Thin 6 Inch Panty Liners (absorbs up to 80 ml)
- Ultra Thin 9 Inch Day/Regular Pads with wings (absorbs up to 100 ml)
- Ultra Thin 12 Inch Heavy/Night Pads with wings (absorbs up to 120 ml)
All of them come with their signature charcoal bamboo and anion strip.
They don't just sell pads though! They also sell tampons and menstrual cups.
Dollar Maxi Pad Club Tampons
I'm more of a tampon gal, so I was curious about their tampons, as I have been notoriously brand-loyal in my tampon purchases.
Thankfully, their tampons are made of 100% viscose rayon with a cotton withdrawal cord and plastic applicator and are FDA, GMP, and BRC approved and certified.
They are also:
- Lotion-Free
- Latex-Free
- Fragrance-free
My preferred tampons have Polysorbate 20 and a polyester string. ?
Their compact pearl applicator tampons come in three sizes:
- Lite (absorbs up to 6 grams)
- Normal (absorbs between 6-9 grams)
- Super (absorbs between 9-12 grams)
I find Dollar Maxi Pad Club tampon core to be longer than my regular tampons which is a little different, but they stayed put well even during exercising and I didn't leak with them.
Dollar Maxi Pad Club Menstrual Cup
I have never used a menstrual cup. I have long been curious about them, so when my friend sent me one to review, I gave it the old college try, but it didn't work for me. She sent me a size small though I should probably use a large since I'm over 25 and have given birth. I found that the stem kept tilting to the side and then stabbing me in the side of my private area, which was definitely not comfortable. I likely was not inserting it properly, so I may try again in the future to figure one of these cups out! It was easy to remove though.
The Dollar Maxi Pad Club's Menstrual Cups are made with 100% medical-grade silicone and are toxin, odor, and allergy free. They have four ventilation holes at the very top for an easy removal as well as ridges on the stem to help remove it.
They offer the cups in 2 sizes:
- Large - for women who are over 25 or who have given birth
- Small - for women under 25 who have not given birth
Both come in a box with instructions on how to insert, use, and sanitize it as well as a pretty pink satin drawstring carry bag. The cups can hold a lot of liquid as well. The great advantage of the cups is they are reusable and more environmentally friendly.
Dollar Maxi Pad Club Feminine Wipes
If you want a really great clean during your period (or otherwise) Dollar Maxi Pad club also sells a pack of feminine wipes that all natural. The small package it comes in is about the size of a package of tissues and can easily fit in your purse or a pocket.
They are made of pure cotton and are alcohol-free. They are lightly fragranced with soothing natural botanicals. It's quite a nice, fresh smell too. It has a reseable sticker to help keep the wipes fresh as well.
Dollar Maxi Pad Club Pamper Me Package
In case you want a little extra pampering during your friend's monthly visits, they offer a special "Pamper Me Package." It comes with Hershey's chocolate bar, a supple animal print face mask, and a latex-free make-up beauty blender. My package had Toblerone (but they've switched over to Hershey's after shipping me the package).
Dollar Maxi Pad Club Postpartum Package
As I recently had a new baby a few months ago, it would have been super nice to have had their postpartum package ordered ahead of time. It's always one of those last minute things when you're in those final days of prep before a baby comes, and this would have taken care of that without me having to run to the store or rummage in my bathroom cabinets after coming home from the hospital.
Their Postpartum Package includes:
- 4oz bottle of Herbal Perineal Spray from Earth Mama
- 20 Heavy Pads
- 30 Regular Pads
- 20 Panty Liners
- Tiger Print Supple Sheet Mask
- Later Free Beauty Blender
- Hershey's Chocolate Bar
- Small sample of Earth Mama's Diaper Cream
- Small Sample of Earth Mama's Nipple Cream
I remember the hospital sending me home with some perineal spray after giving birth to my son, sunnyside up, and having some tearing and stitches down there. The spray was very helpful!
This Earth Mama Perineal Spray is a natural touch-free herbal mist for pregnancy and postpartum use, with a clever upside-down sprayer so it's easier to reach that hard to get place. It has cooling cucumber, organic witch hazel, and organic herbs traditionally used for postpartum relief. There's also no parabens, butane, propellants, artificial preservatives, or artificial fragrance.
You can order just the perineal spray (and sample creams) instead of the whole package if you'd like.
Dollar Maxi Pad Club First Period Kit
As a mom of four daughters, I don't really look forward to having four girls on periods someday, but that's what will happen! Instead of making it a taboo subject (like my mother did in our home) I am trying to be open and honest about it so that I can answer those sometimes awkward questions about periods and hygiene down there. So, having a nice kit to get them started, can be a fun way to help them out.
The First Period Kit includes:
- One Package 20 count Panty Liners (most girls will only use panty liners during the day because their flow is usually small)
- One Package 10 count Regular/ Day Pads with Wings (most young girls will use these for overnight use)
- 1 Package 10 count All Natural Feminine Wipes (teaching good hygiene is very important at this age)
- 1 Cute Zipper Carrying Pouch for storing feminine needs in their backpacks and purses
- 1 Tiger Sheet Face Mask for pampering
- 1 Hershey's Bar to satisfy those cravings
- 1 Downloadable Guide to Your Period
Their website says they recommend getting this kit when your daughter beings fifth grade and to keep on hand for when the time comes.
Dollar Maxi Pad Club Prices and Shipping
Alright, so what do these pretty great products cost and are they actually a good deal? I know you want to know.
Here is the cost breakdown:
- 20 Panty Liners - $1
- 10 Pads - $3
- 8 Tampons - $3
- 1 Menstrual Cup - $20
- 10 Feminine Wipes - $1
- 1 Pamper Me Kit - $6
- 1 Face Mask - $3
- 1 Beauty Blender - $3
- 1 Postpartum Kit - $30
- 1 Earth Mama Perineal Spray - $11
- 1 First Period Kit - $10
I shopped a bit online to see how the competition compares to these prices.
The costs of pads vary widely from brand to brand, from size to features (wings or not), to absorbency (light to heavy) to thickness, and to the material, as well as where you are buying them from. But, generally, I saw a range from about 15-50 cents each for pads, or $1.50-$5.00 for 10 pads (the package size DMPC sells).
Dollar Maxi Pad Club pads cost 30 cents a pad, a fairly average price for pads. The benefit is not having to shop for deals, search for coupons, or use less-than-awesome products in order to save money. Thirty cents a pad is still very affordable and it will only ever be 30 cents each month. Plus, these pads have that bamboo activated charcoal strip which fights odors and cramps, so major wins there!
The Dollar Maxi Pad Club panty liners are only five cents each, which is the low end for what most panty liners cost between 5-10 cents each. And again, charcoal strip ladies!
Tampons from a regular store range from 16-25 cents each, which is lower than Dollar Max Pad Club's price of 37.5 cents per each tampon, as they only sell 8 in a pack. The advantage I see here still is that you can customize your tampon selection much better than you can at the store, where you have to buy three jumbo boxes of each sized tampon, and then find a place to store each of them, and often run out of one size before another. With a custom order each month, you can get exactly what sized tampons you need.
The perineal spray is the same price as other places and the beauty blender is cheaper than most of the beauty blender sponges I saw online at Amazon.
Here is the shipping breakdown:
- Shipping Flat Rate of $1
- First Class Package $3
- Priority Mail $7
- Priority Mail Express $26
- Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii $6
However, shipping costs do not depend on order size! Order what you need and it's just $1 for your order. That's it!
Plus, right now you can try up to $15 worth of products for just the $1 shipping charge!! Use code FAGANS1.
Or, use code FAGANS20 to save 20% off on non-subscription orders like menstrual cups, perineal spray, postpartum packages and first-period kits!
They also donate a percentage of their sales to help provide homeless women with feminine needs. You can also choose to donate more to the same charity just by clicking the Donate button on the order page.
Ordering and Subscription Services
Okay, ready to try them out so you're ready for your "friend" to come again next month?
Here's how it works.
Head over to Dollar Maxi Pad Club's website, then select what you think you'll need or want for your flow (or what you want to try out). Order as much or as little as you'd like, but try to guess how much you use during your typical period. This is important because your order of pads and tampons becomes your regular monthly shipment.
However, you choose how frequently you want your shipment to come based on typical cycle lengths - 21 days, 28 days, or 35 days.
Proceed to your cart and finish checking out and they will ship you your first order. It takes about 3 to 4 days to arrive after you place your order. They send out the orders the day they are placed unless it’s after 5 PM MST or they are placed on a Sunday.
Then, after you place an order, you can go into your account and manage it. You can:
- Skip an upcoming order
- Change the product quantities
- Delete a product from your order
You can add products to your subscriptions by clicking on "Add to Existing Subscription" on the product. You can also cancel your subscription at any time.
After you try them out, please let them (and me!) know what you think of their products!
Do you think the charcoal strip helped fight odors and cramps and make your monthly visitor far less annoying to have hanging around for a few days? Did you find their other products comfortable and effective?
Try it today and let me know!
