The letter P is such a great letter to teach a preschool lesson on! So many words start with P! I had so many great theme ideas, but ended up (loosely) choosing P is for Plants for my children’s group preschool lesson plan. Unfortunately, my great ideas for making our own little green houses or otherwise “planting” a seed didn’t happen due to my poor planning.  But, we did still have a fun and easy lesson this past week, doing lots of letter P activities for preschool. *My personal affiliate links are used in this post.*

Introducing the Letter P

Like we always do when we start lessons I teach, we started with a prayer. I then asked the girls what letter prayer starts with! They said P! We then practiced writing the letter P, upper and lower-case. I then drew bubble letter P’s which they then lined peanuts in. We also discussed the sound a p makes and many common words that start with P.

P is for Plants

I introduced plants to the girls by reading a book I found at the library called “From Seed to Apple Tree: Following the Life Cycle.” I liked that this book was simple, and introduced some new terms related to plants and tress and even talked a bit about seasons. We talked about how much of our food–fruits and vegetables–come from plants!

Construction Paper and Scissor Practice

For one of our letter p activities for preschool, we made construction paper flowers. I drew little circles on construction paper, and gave them some scissors to practice cutting them out, mostly because I just read an interesting post about the importance of scissor skills. It was a bit of a struggle for most of them, but some did better than others. I helped cut out some of the pieces (the stem and grass), and then the preschoolers glued them down.  I was going to have them label the different parts of the plant, but we didn’t.

Puzzling

One of my favorite letter P activities for preschool is puzzles!  I have a growing collection of 25 piece puzzles for my daughters. In fact, they received several new puzzles for Christmas this year. Our favorite puzzles are made by Puzzle Patch. We have about 10 of their puzzles. My daughters, and their friends, love putting them together. While they worked together on some puzzles,  I cleaned up the paper project.

Play-Doh

We then sat down with some homemade Play-Doh using the first recipe on this post from We Love Being Moms. I asked the girls to create a plant, a fruit, or a vegetable, with their play-doh, however, some animals ended up being made, as well as just general squishing.

Painting with Finger Paints

After the play-doh, we busted out some finger paints (also a Christmas gift)! Once they painted a picture or two, they were given some time to run around and play!

Preschool Snack Time

Of course, you need snacks! I gave the kids peanuts (since we had already done the bubble letter P with them) as well as some peaches (from a can), and popcorn! They loved them, but also requested raisins, which don’t start with p, but are a great preschool snack anyway!  As we ate some popcorn, we also sang the LDS Primary song Popcorn Popping!
