Wondering if you can use coupons with Walmart Grocery Pickup? Or maybe even if you can use your EBT card with Walmart Grocery Pickup? Don’t worry, the answers are below!
On Facebook the other day one of my local friends, Crystal, tagged me in a post with her personal Walmart Grocery Pickup review. Our local Walmart recently became a participating Walmart Grocery that offers a free curbside grocery pick-up service.
My friend was a fan. She said:
I just tried this and it was amazing! I took my time shopping, double checked my list against my week’s meal plan, price compared to other stores to make sure I was getting the best deal. And I did it all without my kids whining through the store or running down the aisles. So amazing! I will also say that they pick you the best produce. Better than I pick on my own in the store actually.
I was definitely intrigued by this, as a homeschooling mom of four little kids! I like saving money, and I hate grocery shopping (and not because I take four kids grocery shopping with me), so I decided it was worth a shot, even if we usually shop at H-E-B for our groceries instead of Walmart.
I figured it would be great to write up my own Walmart Grocery Review to share it with you (and this post is NOT sponsored) so you can know whether or not to try it out yourself.
But, first, what is the Walmart Grocery Pickup and does it save me money? Would it really be so amazing?
What is Walmart Grocery Pickup?
Walmart Grocery is a customer service feature where you order online or through the Walmart Grocery app and a Walmart employee does the shopping for you and brings it to your car at a time window you select.
You’ll make your grocery order at Grocery.Walmart.com or through the Walmart Grocery app with your Walmart.com account.
How does Walmart Grocery work?
If you are wondering how does Walmart Pickup work, here’s a brief overview:
Order groceries (and other household items) online in the convenience of your home and even on the go. The pickup service is free and there are no service fees or markups and they do not accept tips. You get the same Everyday Low Prices found in stores.
When I signed into my Walmart.com account it already had some of my favorite items right at the top based on my shopping history.
Walmart Grocery has a wide selection of items, even non-grocery items.
I often order random items, like baby clothes hangers, a microwave splatter cover, wood glue, hair ties, kid toothbrushes, binders, bug spray, various cleaning supplies, and Benadryl, along with our groceries for the week.
I really love that I can order these random non-food items and not have to search up and down various aisles in-store looking for them!
Placing a Walmart Grocery Pickup Order
Once you’ve checked over your list against your meal plan (or shopping list), you will schedule a pick-up time, and pay for your order.
Every order you make needs to be at least $30 and scheduled for later in the day or for the next day, depending on the time you’re placing the order.
After you place your order they give you about two hours (or more) to make edits to your list. This is nice for when you forgot to add something, or 30 minutes later realize you are out of butter too. Or if you want to remove something. The grace period is a nice feature!
Picking Up Your Walmart Grocery Pickup Order
About 15 minutes before your designated pickup time window, you will get a confirmation email saying your order is ready and what if any substitutions you have.
It’s recommended that you call them 10 minutes prior to your arrival or that you check-in as you head to the store via their Walmart Grocery App (You can download it on Android and iTunes for free – you can also use the app to add items to your cart all week and then schedule your trip when you’re ready!).
I have had issues with the app losing connection or otherwise “losing me” on my way to the store, for whatever reason. It’s not a big deal to call them when you arrive still.
The first time I used their service I called the number on my order confirmation 10 minutes before we showed up. He assured me that he would be ready for us when we got there.
We followed the signs at our Walmart store for the Grocery Pickup area. As soon as we pulled into one of the six or so (empty) spots, two Walmart employees came out to meet us with our groceries.
One introduced himself as my “Personal Shopper,” shook my hand, and went over my order.
There were three items that were not available, and he was ready with alternative offerings, which I could accept or reject. Any rejected items were refunded to my credit card.
If the substituted item(s) are more expensive than the one(s) you ordered, Walmart will always charge the lower amount.
After we went through the substitutions, I signed saying I picked up my order, and he loaded the groceries into the back of my car. He then handed me a little Welcome to Walmart Grocery goodie bag with some free samples!
The Pickup process took all of about 3-5 minutes. My family stayed in the car during the entire thing. No undoing of seat belts. No baby carrier required. No yelling at my kids to not touch everything within the store. No waiting in lines. No impulse purchases.
It was pretty spectacular.
It’s grocery shopping without having to go up and down the aisles.
Walmart Grocery Pickup Referral Codes
Plus, because my friend Crystal shared her personal referral code with me to try it out, she and I both received $10 off our $50 orders!
Everyone can save $10 off your first order of $50 or more with code WOWFRESH. Then, once you sign up and place your first order, you can start referring your friends with a unique referral code! If one of them uses your code, and you get a $10 discount code and so do they!
You can refer up to 10 people and save $10 every time you make an order of $50 or more. Codes are sent via email and expire one year after they are issued.
I was actually able to use the unique coupon codes multiple times before they expired too, though I cannot guarantee that will work for you. But, saving $10 on every Walmart Grocery made using their service an even better deal!
Downsides of Walmart Grocery
Walmart Grocery Pickup doesn’t keep everything stocked, which means, even if it says it’s available online, I may not end up getting it when I pick up my order. This means I get offered alternatives or refunded those items.
If you know what day your Walmart store receives new shipments, it may be wise to make your pickup date be those days so that they are fully stocked.
Also, not every food and drink item is available to order online, even if it is available in store. I once tried purchasing Tampico and I could not order it through Walmart Grocery, even though I know they have some in-store. They seem to be making improvements in this regard all the time though.
And, lastly, a downside is sometimes you’re not always exactly sure what you’ll receive! This is true when buying certain products that come in various colors (like the sippy cups I ordered once – the choice of colors was up to them) but also for items you don’t read carefully enough online to know how large or small they are.
If you don’t know what 8 oz of pizza looks like versus 24 oz, then you could be surprised when you are given a mini pizza versus a family pizza.
Ordering online removes that tactile experience and sight that many people need and crave when grocery shopping too.
Also, you cannot currently pay for your order with Walmart Gift Cards or eGift cards. Payment has to be made by credit card or debit card.
Can I Use Coupons With Walmart Grocery Pickup?
I love being able to use coupons when grocery shopping and saving those extra dollars and cents!
So, one of my big concerns with using the convenience of Walmart Grocery Pickup is whether or not I can use coupons with Walmart Grocery Pickup service and save more money.
Unfortunately, this is one of the big cons of using their service. No, Walmart Grocery Pickup does not accept manufacturer’s coupons.
However, people have commented that they print off their email receipts and use that as their receipt for other money-saving apps.
I haven’t personally tried this, nor do I know if this in compliance with every apps’ terms of service, or if this is true for every app. You can try if you’d like, but as it currently stands, I don’t know that it is generally allowed by most of these apps.
Can you use iBotta with Walmart Grocery Pickup?
This is NEW, but the answer is YES! You can use ibotta for Walmart Grocery Pickup!
If you aren’t an ibotta member, join now with my referral link, and then once in the app search for Walmart Grocery and it should come up. If you click on their link before filling your grocery order, you can get $2 or $3 cashback!
It will take up to 30 days for it to no longer be pending in your account, but is a great way to save money on your pickup order!
Or, if you prefer, you can use Shopkick (join Shopkick now with my referral code FAGAN and get $5 cash back bonus after your first scan in the first 7-days) and get 450 points in your Shopkick account, which is equal to slightly less than $2 I believe.
Does Walmart Grocery Pickup Accept EBT?
Yes, you can now use EBT with Walmart Grocery Pickup orders! They accept SNAP/EBT (food stamps) at all participating Walmart Online Grocery locations. To learn how to use it as payment, check out this post.
Does Walmart Grocery Pickup Take WIC?
At this time, no, they do not accept WIC or eWIC.
Can You Use Savings Catcher with Walmart Grocery Pickup?
UPDATE: As of May 14, 2019, Walmart no longer offers the Saving Catcher App or price-matching. (Source)
Overall I think Walmart Grocery Pickup is amazing! Pretty much life-changing.
I have never enjoyed grocery shopping for a host of reasons, and this is one way to make it extremely easy and fast! And the cost isn’t increased, there is no fee, and I often use a referral promo code, so it’s a total win.
While I won’t save those extra few cents and dollars from coupons and apps, the hour of my life that is saved more than makes up for that in my opinion.
I feel like I save more using their service as well as I can’t make impulse purchases at checkout (like a cool bottle of coke) and have to be strategic with my shopping.
I highly encourage you to try out Walmart Grocery for yourself! Get $10 off your first online order of $50 or more with code WOWFRESH.

Will you try out Walmart Grocery Pickup? What’s your review of their service if you’ve tried it already?
Chelsea @ Life With My Littles says
It sounds pretty cool, but I’m loving my HEB!! I was always way pro-Walmart until we moved to Texas but I actually save about $30 a week shopping at HEB!
Katelyn Fagan says
I prefer shopping at H-E-B too! I mean, I would shop Kroger over H-E-B, but it’s not an option here. I did hear that in parts of San Antonio and Austin H-E-B is offering free grocery delivery, an InstaCart or something. Have you heard about this?
Kiley says
you can do savings catcher, they email you the receipt with the TC number that you can handtype in the app.
Katelyn Fagan says
Have you had it actually work? I tried entering the TC number, but I do not think it is allowed per the TOS.
Heather Morris says
I use Savings Catcher every time I do a grocery pickup from Walmart using the TC number on the emailed receipt. It’s always worked for me. I really do wish Ibotta would work, but unfortunately it doesn’t (yet?).
Katelyn Fagan says
Really? And do you ever get cash back? (Says the woman currently waiting at Walmart Grocery Pickup again)
Heather Morris says
Yes. Not every time, but as often as I do from my in-store receipts.
Katelyn Fagan says
And do you use the date you pickup or the date you order?
Alisha says
I use Ibotta. I just print out the receipt then take a pic of it and scan my items. It has been working for me.
Katelyn Fagan says
Seriously?! I will try that!!
Melissa says
Or copy and paste .
Kiley says
Yes I’ve been successful two or three times.
Kiley says
Only one time it didn’t work because I think I put the order date instead of pickup date.
Katelyn Fagan says
Maybe that was why it didn’t work for me. I had no idea which date to use! So you want to use the pickup date, not the order date?
Kiley says
Actually one of the pickup shoppers is who told me to do that when I first started

Hi All. I might be able to help you out with, eventually, making products currently available in your local Walmart store also available for purchase via Online Grocery Pickup. Not all products available in the store are available for purchase online, but you can change that by talking to your Personal Shopper. Tell them what you want, provide them with any information you can about the product (Tampico, Mango Punch, UPC 9518802129 9) or just give them a label from the product that includes the full bar code. It will take a while for your product to appear on the website (maybe several weeks) but it should happen eventually. Once your local Online Grocery Pickup has the information about the product you want, they send a written request up the line. Now it’s out of their hands. It won’t do any good to ask the Associate delivering the groceries to your car about the next shipment of Tampico Peach Punch UPC 9518800522 0. They don’t know. They’re just happy to help you.
Kim says
how do you “talk to your personal shopper”?
Susie Olson says
I am excited to use this service to occasionally buy groceries for my college son. I figure if I gift him some groceries, I can pick out stuff that I as a mom would buy for him (not a bunch of junk food :). I am sure he would be enthusiastic to go and pick up his scheduled free food!
rk says
Recent experience was bruised apples (and not the type I ordered), inedible bananas and milk with short expiration date. instructed no substitutions, yet they decided on their own to make choices.
Will no longer buy perishables on line.
Char says
If you use Walmart pick up service you can add your TC # & their system will accept but the it comes back as TC # no found. As of today 9-22-17 it does not work!
Jami says
That’s such BS, people should complain. There’s no excuse for us not being able to get the same savings via this service.
Michelle says
I have had some issues with items being substituted and not told but for the most part, it’s been a great service! Saves me so much time and I don’t impulse buy at the store. Not sure if there is a way to use coupons yet but I hope there will be in the future. Also, for some of you that say you can’t use savings catcher, that is not true! They email you the pickup confirmation with the TC #, and you just have to type it in. I got 5$ back last order!! Its worth it even if you can’t use coupons. On a side note, I don’t usually order my produce there. I just like to pick my own apples so i go to another farmers market type store to get what i need.
Michael says
So does the Walmart Savings Catcher work with online order in-store pick up using grocery.walmart.com?
Also, if you have a Walmart Store Card or Walmart Mastercard, you get 3% back for Walmart.com purchases (and 1% in store). Would you get 3% with online order in-store pick up using grocery.walmart.com? That would be an additional 2% back for all grocery orders using grocery.walmart.com that you wouldn’t get in-store!
Adrienne says
I have used it three times, and I am in love! The personal shopper told me that I can use the savings catcher app so I will try it this time!
All of my produce has been amazing quality. All substitutions have been to my favor (larger size, brand name, or more quantitiy). I have only had 1 item that I wasn’t sure about, and it worked out fine in the long run. All mothers need this app!
Kate says
Came here to say you can use your savings catcher you get the TC code with your emailed receipt. I have since the inception of Walmart grocery pick up. Great summary. I’ve been using weekly since the start and have not only saved money but time and headaches too!
Grey says
I can’t find the TC number on my email receipt! Where is it?
tnchick says
I put my TC number that was emailed once picked up and the savings catcher tells me invalid – to check my number or date. I used the pick up date. Unsure how you all are getting it to work. ??
Heidi says
Use the date that you put the order in. Not your pick up date.
Heidi says
You got to think about what its really looking for on your receipt. Its trying to find your transaction, and it wants to know what day to look for that #. The date that you pick it up doesn’t really mean anything to that search function.
Rosanna says
Expired food:
2 packages of 4 count Chobani Greek yogurt that had expired two days prior
1 order of deli sliced cheese that was expired on the day
1 order of deli turkey that was expired on the day
1 order of deli ham that was expired on the day
Missing
Diet Coke 2-Liter
Pita Chips
Asparagus
Unwanted substitutions:
Marrow Bone dog biscuits- my dogs are not used to these and one got very sick
smaller boxes of dry goods coconut milk rather than the larger carton of cold coconut milk -different flavors as well
4 packs of bottled Root Beer in place of the cream soda that was needed for a recipe
Chanda Jarvis says
Can you use coupons when doing Wal-mart Grocery Pick-up
Kat says
For people complaining about substitutions, it’s SUPER EASY to select whether you want them or not. When you go to check out, the last screen you see before confirming your order is a list of everything in your cart with a check-box beside it. You simply uncheck any items that you don’t want to be substituted.
If you do want a substitution but don’t like it, you are able to to refuse it at pick up. My Walmart always tells me if there was a substitution and then I look and see if I accept it. My substitutions have always been great. Usually it’s a bigger size than I ordered. They DON’T CHARGE YOU if they have to substitute and it’s more expensive, so you get a more expensive item for the lower price. WIN-WIN. You can also check all of your produce and fresh meat and refuse any you don’t find acceptable.
If you ever have an issue with an order, fill out the survey in your email (you will get one in every “Your Order has been Picked Up” email. My Walmart associates told me that they really do read them at the store and headquarters. One time I did not receive one of my items. They not only refunded me immediately, they also sent me a $15 off code for my next order!!
I LOVE my Walmart Grocery Pick-Up. I’ve had amazing experiences. I have used it every week for a bout a year and half now, and I will NEVER GO BACK to shopping in-store. It’s life-changing.
Annette says
Life alteringly good service for a relatively spry 86 yr old. Love the pickup service.
Dina says
One major flaw to the savings catcher is you cannot pay for grocery pick up order with savings catcher money. I have not been in a store in about a year and would like to redeem it without going inside.
Eilene says
The TC# for Savings Catcher is not the same as the Order number of your walmart.com/grocery purchase. Once you get your receipt emailed to you, look for the TC# towards the end or bottom of the receipt.
Nicole Pulliam says
You can no longer do this with savings catcher as they have changed savings catcher to only work with Walmart Pay and as of right now, Wal-Mart pay is not an option for the online grocery pickup. I’ve been trying to call to get a resolution, but well you know how WM is
melissaa says
Yes now it works with walmart pay only
Teresa says
How do you use walmart pay with online grocery pickup?
Summer B says
You can’t anymore because they changed Savings Catcher so that you can only submit a receipt when you use Walmart Pay and because you can’t use Walmart Pay for Grocery Pickup, you can’t use Savings Catcher either. They’ve even addressed this question in their FAQ section in Savings Catcher. Hopefully they’ll change that soon.
