If 2017 is your year to find verses to memorize, the following 12 scriptures to memorize are good ones to learn.
I hate to admit it but I need to step up my spiritual game.
I lost my way a bit last year. It was a hard year, personally. But I feel like I’m finally back on the path. I just need something fun and exciting to keep me going. I need a way to focus my gospel learning. And preferably a way that includes my kids.
We made huge strides this year towards regular family prayer and scripture study, even if many included fidgeting while Dad read a few verses from the Bible or Book of Mormon every night.
But I was hit or miss in my efforts to help them learn and remember scriptures. I had started to help them memorize one scripture a month and I made it for two months and then my kids hit the “I can’t possibly go to bed without whining and needing five hundred things before I go to sleep” phase and I gave up on a lot of things, scriptures included.
I want to try again in 2017. My kids are young so I’m trying to be realistic in my expectations. And let’s be honest, I might not be able to memorize more than one each month myself.
I’ve picked one scripture for each month of 2017. Some of them will push their scriptural understanding and mine, and few of them are really just for me. I firmly believe my kids understand more than they can verbalize back to me. And I know our spirits understand it all.
I also found some great tips for helping my kids memorize scriptures that you’ll for sure want to check out because they’re genius!
12 Scriptures to Memorize in 2017
January 2017 Scripture – James 1:5-6
James 1:5-6 is the theme for the Young Men and Young Women this year for the LDS Church. I picked it as my scripture to memorize for January because I want to memorize it first each year. I love, love, love the message. We are in the midst of teaching our kids how, why, and when to pray. I could not ask for a better way to say ask anytime, anywhere and for anything.

I love this scripture for February because it is everything. Everything that I love about my relationship with my Father in Heaven and my Savior. Plus, February is the month of love and this scripture to memorize focuses on our heart.

April 2017 Scripture – Doctrine & Covenants 6:21
Jeffrey R Holland said “Trust God and believe in good things to come.” It’s been a challenging year for me personally and when I read this scripture a few months ago it spoke to my heart. I actually get chills when I think about my Savior saying “I am the light which shineth in darkness.” If we have faith, we need never be afraid of the dark.
A similar Bible verse is John 8:12: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Pick either verse to memorize!

May 2017 Scripture – Luke 12:48
My oldest girl turns five in May. FIVE! This scripture will come right about the time she gets a bit older allowing me to up the ante a bit on the whole “make good choices” thing.
She’s learning right now that she chooses her own actions but that there are consequences for her actions or choices. Case in point? Tonight she chose to bite her brother so tomorrow she has to give him half of her fruit snacks (consequence).

June 2017 Scripture – Matthew 21:22
Learning about prayer is an everyday thing in our home as our kids learn to say prayers on their own. I’m trying to be more open about all of the time I spend each day praying. Before I was a mom, I spent a good amount of my day in prayer. Well, more accurately I would simply talk to God in my head as my day went along, because of that whole “keep a prayer in your heart” thing.
But as a mom, I’m actually praying and pleading all. day. long. I’m learning as I go along this path of motherhood that I need to clue my kids into the times I pray for things that they haven’t learned to pray for yet. One of them got hurt, mommy says a prayer. The baby has a rash, mommy says a prayer. And on and on. Right now they just give me weird looks, but they go with it. Someday, it will sink in…. I know it!
One of my favorite experiences with prayer was the time I could actually hear and feel God laugh at me. Read about it on my blog Embracing the Eternal.

July 2017 Scripture – Mark 10:27
I feel like this one fits so well with the endless possibilities that summer brings. The days when it seems like the sun will never set. The days when my kids smell like grass, and dirt and sugar. Anything is possible and everything is possible through God.

August 2017 Scripture – Proverbs 31:25
This one is for me. When the days get long and kids get a bit crazy, and work gets stressful . . . This is my favorite (non-King James Bible) verse from Proverbs 31. It reminds me that if I stay strong in my faith and in my convictions to my covenants then I can face anything without fear.

September 2017 Scripture – Psalms 9:9
This is a great reminder of all the Savior is and can be for each of us. I like that this scripture will kick off the holidays for us next year. Life gets so very crazy during the last few months of the year. I hope this will remind us where we can turn when life is truly just too much.

October 2017 Scripture – Moroni 10:5
I have a nephew that will be baptized in December next year. He will also receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost which will qualify him for constant companionship of the Comforter whom Jesus Christ gifted to his disciples predicated upon their faithfulness. A companion to testify of Christ, to educate and provide comfort.

November 2017 Scripture – Doctrine & Covenants 121:34-35
I’m trying to teach my children to live “big, huge, kind lives.” And so I am teaching them to look outward, to give, to aspire to heavenly things. And this is a perfect scripture to use to remind my family that our heart needs to be set on heavenly things, not things of this world.
Hint – this should help in setting the right expectations for Christmas presents too.

December 2017 Scripture – Isaiah 2:5
What a great way to end the year! We read plenty of Christmas scriptures in December so I picked one that reminds me of how to keep the spirit of Christ alive in my heart as the new year rolls over and I get a chance to start it all again!

I look forward to memorizing scripture this year individually and with my children. It may just be what I need after a rough year.
