I grew up in South Austin, Texas and my parents specifically picked houses without a fireplace every time we had to move because we just didn’t use it more than two days a year.

No fireplace = no place to hang stockings, right? 

Even though we didn’t have a fireplace to hang our Christmas stockings on, we still did Christmas stockings, usually full of traditional stocking stuffers like an orange in a Christmas stocking.

As a wife and a parent, it’s been fun, too, figuring out stocking stuffers for him (my husband) as well as for the kids each year, and figuring out if I should make homemade Christmas stockings for my kids, or what we should do for them as they add on to our family.

The point is – just because we didn’t have a fireplace, it doesn’t mean we didn’t do Christmas stockings just like everyone else! We just got creative with how we hung them and our Christmas stocking holder.

DIY Stocking Holders 

Don’t like any of the above options? Or you just don’t want to spend a lot on a stocking holder? Then make your own! Homemade items always add to the festive decor! Best sellers are great but sometimes, homemade and DIY stockings are the best.

This DIY stocking hanger tree from Dukes& Duchesses is easily assembled with some wood, spray paint, and some hooks.

This idea from the Home Depot blog is simple and affordable. Plus, it’s easy to store and not too bulky. You can jazz it up with glitter spray paint or leave it “rustic” looking.

I also love the idea of using a shower curtain rod to hang stockings. That way if your family is not done growing yet, you can add extra stockings to it whenever you need to! Here’s the tutorial from Maison De Pax.

This picture actually comes from a tutorial on Riva La Diva for making stockings, but the way she hung the Christmas stockings from a decorative tree branch is so creative! As long as you have something weighing down one end of the tree branch, it should get the job done. And look cute, too!

I found this idea from A Mom’s Take. It requires wood and supplies that you can buy at your local Home Depot. You can personalize your Christmas stocking holder with cabinet knobs, hooks, or whatever you’d like.

The great thing about this stocking hanger is that if you don’t have a mantel, you can easily put this one on a bookshelf.

If you want another idea that’s cheap and easy and looks good, then consider buying some arrow push pin picture hooks from Target. For the past three years we’ve been in our house, we have designated one wall as our “Christmas Stocking Wall” and just tack up the Christmas stockings with push pins.
