This post on glass shower cleaners is sponsored by Bar Keepers Friend. All opinions and experiences are my own.
I don’t mind cleaning all that much. But, one of my least favorite things to clean is the shower and bathtub.
It’s often back-bending labor and squatting and you most often get wet in the process. Plus, if you have tile, it’s so many little pieces of tile and grout to clean!

But, perhaps one of the worst parts of cleaning showers is having to figure out how to clean shower glass!
Shower Glass Cleaner
We once had a window in our shower, which, unsurpringly, got some serious hard water stains on it. I used some vinegar and scour pad, and it removed hard water stains from the window, but it also kinda scratched the window from the pad and the whole room reeked of vinegar (not my favorite smell – though a cheap natural cleaner which is always great).
But, this method took a lot of serious elbow grease too. It didn’t just wipe up.
Bar Keepers Friend Descaler
As an ambassador for Bar Keepers Friend, they sent me a brand new product (still not quite available) to test out in my home. This product is called “Bar Keepers Friend Descaler.” Now, this isn’t to be confused with their Coffee Maker Descaler product which you use to clean your coffee maker and Keurig Coffee Maker.
This new Bar Keepers Friend Descaler Foaming Power Cleaner comes in a spray bottle and is specifically designed to remove lime, calcium, and hard water deposits!
The BKF Descaler can be used to clean:
- Stainless steel
- Glass
- Porcelain
- Ceramic Tile
- Sink and Shower Fixtures
- Fiberglass
- Toilet Bowls
- Sinks (here’s how to remove rust stains from porcelain ones)
The Descaler removes:
- lime
- calcium
- hard water deposits
- soap scum
- stains
- tarnish
The active ingredients in it are:
- Sulfamic acids
- Citric acids
- Glycolic acids
This means you need to wear household rubber gloves when handling this product and need to keep away from eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep it out of reach of children. But it is septic safe and doesn’t contain bleach. But, do not mix this with other chemicals or cleaning products.
Do not use this product on the following surfaces:
- marble
- mirrors
- wood
- colored grout
- fabric
- painted surfaces
- plastic surfaces
I really wanted to see how well (or not) this product worked, so my husband and I let our shower build up soap scum and hard-water on our shower glass block wall surrounds and Plexiglas shower door for several months, no longer squeegeeing it after we were done showering (which is super smart by the way – helps prevent a lot of build-up on your glass and fights against mildew and mold growing too).

So, back in March 2020 I finally thought the shower glass walls were grimey enough and it was time to test the Bar Keepers Friend Descaler on it.
Watch my Youtube video for instructions and my honest reactions to how well I thought it did below:
And if you prefer written instructions, here you go too.
How to Clean Shower Glass
Supplies Needed to Use Bar Keepers Friend Descaler:
Time needed: 20 minutes
How to Clean Shower Glass with Bar Keepers Friend Descaler
- Put on household rubber gloves.
Latex gloves are fine substitutes.
- Turn the nozzle from STOP to spray.
- Spray liberally onto the surface.
- Let sit for 3 minutes.
- Scrub gently with a sponge, microfiber cloth, or brush.
If you have glass shower blocks like I do, you’ll want to get all those little ledges on the glass cubes.
- Rinse well with cold clean water.
Use your clean shower head to help with this if possible.
- Dry with squeegee and cloth.
Dry off your clean shower glass with a squeegee, followed up by a clean and dry microfiber cloth.
- Enjoy the super clean glass shower walls, doors, and blocks!

I was seriously SO impressed by this product!! I thought it did an amazing job! And I didn’t have to scrub hard or much (I did have to get the ledges on the glass blocks), the smell was mild and not annoying or headache inducing, and it didn’t take long for the descaler to do its magic.
I seriously kept marveling at how beautiful our shower glass wall was afterward. I was so proud of it and how amazing it was!!
My pictures don’t do it justice to how sparkly it was.

Hi, I can’t find this anywhere not even on the Company site. There are several others but not the one you’ve shown here. Is it a new product that hasn’t been released yet?

Yes! I am sorry if I didn’t make that clear in the post. It is NOT available yet to the masses. 🙁 But, they said I could share this now to help build some excitement for it when it does release! I filmed this tutorial back in March, so I’m excited they finally let me share about it because I was SO impressed! But, I also hate that it’s not available yet cause… umm… you will all want it. 😁 In the meantime, I bet the MORE spray will work pretty well, though not as well. Sorry!
