Unicorns have been a cultural phenomenon for centuries, but I feel like even more so in the last few years.
I myself have enjoyed things featuring unicorns, especially the super popular Squatty Potty commercial which had me rolling in laughter and joking with family and friends about rainbow-pooping unicorns.
In fact, it was this video that led me to actually making rainbow pooping unicorn cookies with a friend, surprising our kids with them. It was hilarious and delicious.

Plus, we all like to call odd ducks or people who are “different” or special unicorns. Like “unicorn moms” who have kids who always eat their vegetables without a fuss or sleep through the night, every night since birth and who never ever raise their voice with their children, because they don’t have to – their children are 100% obedient.
Right. Unicorns are mythical creatures of lore.
Anyway, unicorns and rainbows are everywhere right now, especially for all things little girls.
My kids learned about a “Pink Fluffy Unicorn” song from their cousins this summer (thanks for that sis!) which is often stuck in my head even though it is annoyingly repetitive.
My toddler daughter and my 8-year-old both received unicorn branded clothes from Stitch Fix Kids this summer.
When KiwiCo approached me about reviewing their new Glowing Horn Unicorn Costume (ages 5-16), I happily agreed to do this post in exchange!
I have loved KiwiCo products for a long time, featuring their educational subscription boxes as a great option for a monthly subscription box for toddlers, a fun arts & crafts box for kids, and their Cricket Crate newborn pack a great gift for new parents. Plus, they are one of the better monthly science kits for kids around.
Last month we checked out the Kiwi Crate Disk Launcher and this month we received both this DIY unicorn costume (for my daughters, of course) and a dinosaur head costume (for my son).
How to Make a DIY Unicorn Costume
If you want to make a homemade unicorn costume with a light-up unicorn horn and colorful mane and tail, be sure to grab KiwiCo’s kit in their online store. It’s super easy to put together! In fact, that’s half the fun of getting this as a kit versus buying it pre-made.
The kit comes with everything you need to make a felt unicorn head with matching unicorn tail. You and your hild will learn how to craft with felt, shiny sheets, and lights; and read about the science behind iridescence and the animals that inspired the unicorn myth — all while getting your unicorn on!
The unicorn headpiece is made using their pre-hole-punched felt head template, several white painted brass fasteners, felt tape, gold string, tulle, elastic string, and pipe cleaners.
To assemble the head, you secure the brass fasteners in the correct lined up holes. You also indent the felt to help form the nostrils and adhere the large adhesive googly eyes.
The daughter who is 8 followed the instructions with its simple and clear directions and pictures and assembled the DIY unicorn Halloween costume all by herself in about 15 minutes, with minimal help from me and younger siblings.
The DIY unicorn horn required you to fold a shiny sheet into a cone, fasten it with brass fasteners, and use some felt tape to adhere the provided (x2) small LED light inside it. I helped with this part, as well as inserting the bottom flaps into the slits in the unicorn head template.
To make the unicorn costume DIY tail and mane, we tied some pipe cleaners around string or into the unicorn head, and it was good to go!
I had my three-year-old daughter put on some white clothes – a white T-shirt, ballet tutu, and her pink unicorn slip-on shoes she got from her Stitch Fix Kids for toddler girls box.
The kids enjoying wearing and sharing our new DIY unicorn costume! The light-up horn is super cool and the whole thing very colorful and fun. I’m pretty sure one of my daughters will be sporting this homemade unicorn costume for Halloween this year!
